Born in South Korea, visual artist Ginok Song spent most of her early life in the city of Pusan. From the moment she enrolled in formal art lessons she knew the passion building inside her was to create art. After completing a two year art program at the renowned DaDa Art School from 1992 to 1993, she was accepted into the Pusan National University fine arts program. She was greatly influenced by the social demonstration movement that Korean students created in the 1990s. Her series /Through The Window/ depicts ordinary people and how this movement affected their everyday lives. In 1998 she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, specializing in painting.
Ginok moved to Newfoundland in 2000, and her art practice has been dramatically affected by her new enviroment. The raw natural beaty of Newfoundland and its colourful people have provided the opportunity to explore new possibilities in her art. In 2003 she opened an art studio in Petty Harbour, called "River Rock". Ginok can be found working in her studio every day and teaches art classes on a regular bases to adults and children on weekday evenings.
Inspired by the rugged beauty that surrounds, Ginok has produced three series of paintings, 'Newfound View', 'Quite Observation' and 'Newfound Expression'. Currently she is working on two new series called 'Two Hearts' and 'The Dance'.
Ginok's work ethic is one of strong basics and an open mind. She sometimes quotes Lewis Crarroll to her students: "Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop."
Ginok is member of Visual Artists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador and member of Board of Directors of St. Michael's Printshop.
